Amazing People

First Who, Then What

At DeARX we know that our vision is achieved through having the right people on our team. To this end we have been influenced by a few well known thinkers and concepts – we share these here as they embody our philosophy and articulate it beautifully.

“First Who, Then What—get the right people on the bus—is a concept developed in the book “Good to Great”. Those who build great organisations make sure they have the right people on the bus and the right people in the key seats before they figure out where to drive the bus. They always think first about who and then about what. When facing chaos and uncertainty, and you cannot possibly predict what’s coming around the corner, your best “strategy” is to have a busload of people who can adapt to and perform brilliantly no matter what comes next. Great vision without great people is irrelevant.” Thank you to Jim Collins.

You cannot predict what is coming around the corner

The best people embrace the unknown and adapt fast

A great vision without great people is irrelevant

Looking backwards we can see the impact the “Right People” have had on our business. We have also seen how the “Wrong People” put us into positions that did not serve us nor our customers. Without the “Right People” we cannot achieve our vision but to take on people purely for the sake of growth, and risk having “Wrong People” do long term damage, is not worth it.

Equity markets insist on linear growth but in our experience water ebbs and flows. We would rather experience a slow down in growth to ensure we continue to build teams with the “Right People” which ultimately results in our ability to benefit from accelerated phases as well. It makes the ride more fun anyway!
